How A Card Magician Can Learn And Improve

Card Magician

Card magician techniques can be enough on their own to give you an act which can be taken into a public performance, either as street magic or in an official setting. Playing cards have been one of the stalwart props of the magician since the very early days, because they lend themselves so easily to the magician’s art. When you buy a deck of cards, you effectively buy a prop which can provide more than enough tricks to last you a lifetime. Whole books have been devoted to tricks using playing cards, and these books have been extremely thick.

If you want to start learning card tricks to perform as part of a magician’s act, you will first have to decide whether the act is going to be devoted exclusively, or almost exclusively, to card tricks, or whether you are going to include card tricks in a multi-purpose act. If card tricks are going to form the entirety, or the vast majority, of your act, you will need to find at least one card trick which can be used as the focal point of the act. This will need to take many minutes to execute, and it will need to have enough in it to sustain interest for that length of time.

There are two distinct types of card trick, and it is a good idea to incorporate both into your act. The first type uses sleight of hand to make cards appear in places where they shouldn’t. An illusion is created of a card moving to one place when it really moves to another. The other type of card trick involves the magician appearing to have supernatural powers, for example when they appear to be able read someone’s mind in naming a card which they have chosen.

Developing the skills of a card magician is easier than it once was. In the early days of magic, it was not so easy to find information from printed material, as it was so expensive to buy. Now, many books can be borrowed from libraries, or they can be purchased for small amounts from used book stores. Some older books are in the public domain and have been converted to digital format for free download.

The aspiring card magician will also find video instruction on the video sharing sites. This is inevitably limited by the time restriction on videos, but individual techniques are easy enough to show. In the past, the only way to actually see how a trick could be performed was to join a magic society or club. This is still a good idea if you can do it, as you can interact with magicians who have a great deal more experience. Interactive learning will make you an infinitely better card magician.
